Banks and Currency Exchange
● At Manas Airport: Several bank branches and currency exchange offices are located inside the airport, allowing travelers to exchange foreign currency into Kyrgyz soms upon arrival. ATMs are also available for withdrawing cash using international bank cards.
● In Bishkek and Chui region: There are numerous banks and currency exchange offices. It is recommended to compare exchange rates, as they may vary. Major banks such as Optima Bank, Demir Bank, Bakai Bank, Mbank, and Dos-Credobank have extensive branch and ATM networks. Most banks operate from Monday to Friday, but some branches remain open on weekends.
● Currency Exchange Offices: Private exchange offices can be found throughout Bishkek and other cities. They are usually open until late in the evening and often offer better rates than banks. However, for safety reasons, it is advised to use official exchange points. The highest concentration of exchange offices is at the intersection of Moskovskaya and Baytik Baatyr streets (Mossovet area).
● ATMs: Located in major cities and towns, ATMs accept international Visa and Mastercard cards. Some ATMs dispense US dollars, but withdrawals are primarily in the national currency, the Kyrgyz som (KGS).
● Cashless Payments: In large cities and tourist areas, card payments and QR code payments via banking apps are widely accepted. However, in remote areas, carrying cash is recommended.
SIM Cards and Mobile Networks
● At Manas Airport: The airport has sales points for Kyrgyzstan’s main mobile operators, including Beeline, Megacom, and O!. Travelers can purchase a SIM card and choose a suitable tariff plan. A passport is required when purchasing a SIM card.
● In Bishkek and Chui region: SIM cards can be purchased at mobile operator offices, electronics stores, and markets. Mobile operators offer various plans, including internet data packages.
● Network Coverage: Mobile coverage in Kyrgyzstan is generally good, especially in major cities. However, in mountainous regions, network connectivity may be unstable.
Mandatory Phone Registration
Upon entering Kyrgyzstan, foreign tourists are required to register their mobile phones with SIM cards purchased in the country. The registration is done through the mobile service provider, and a passport is required for the process. This procedure is mandatory for all tourists and must be completed within 5 working days from the purchase of the SIM card.
